Variational mesh segmentation via quadric surface fitting

چکیده
Wepresent a new variationalmethod formesh segmentation by fitting quadric surfaces. Each component of the resulting segmentation is represented by a general quadric surface (including plane as a special case). A novel energy function is defined to evaluate the quality of the segmentation, which combines both L2 and L2,1 metrics from a triangle to a quadric surface. The Lloyd iteration is used to minimize the energy function, which repeatedly interleaves between mesh partition and quadric surface fitting. We also integrate feature-based and simplification-based techniques in the segmentation framework, which greatly improve the performance. The advantages of our algorithm are demonstrated by comparing with the state-of-the-art methods. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Type-Constrained Direct Fitting of Quadric Surfaces
We present a catalog of type-specific, direct quadric fitting methods: Given a selection of a point cloud or triangle mesh, and a desired quadric type (e.g. cone, ellipsoid, paraboloid, etc), our methods recover a best-fit surface of the given type to the given data. Type-specific quadric fitting methods are scattered throughout the literature; here we present a thorough, practical collection i...
متن کاملQuadric Surface Extraction by Variational Shape Approximation
Based on Lloyd iteration, we present a variational method for extracting general quadric surfaces from a 3D mesh surface. This work extends the previous variational methods that extract only planes or special types of quadrics, i.e., spheres and circular cylinders. Instead of using the exact L error metric, we use a new approximate L error metric to make our method more efficient for computing ...
متن کاملExtended Abstract nnn Type-Constrained Direct Fitting of Quadric Surfaces Authors
Introduction Efficient fitting of quadric surfaces to unstructured point clouds or triangle meshes is an important component of many reverse engineering systems [6]. Users may prefer a given surface be fit by a specific quadric type: for example, they may want to ensure the quadric is a cone, ellipsoid, or a rotationally-symmetric subtype (spheroid, circular cone, etc). Methods for type-specifi...
متن کاملImprove accuracy for automatic acetabulum segmentation in CT images.
Separation of the femur head and acetabulum is one of main difficulties in the diseased hip joint due to deformed shapes and extreme narrowness of the joint space. To improve the segmentation accuracy is the key point of existing automatic or semi-automatic segmentation methods. In this paper, we propose a new method to improve the accuracy of the segmented acetabulum using surface fitting tech...
متن کاملCentroidal Voronoi Tessellation of Line Segments and Graphs
Centroidal Voronoi Tessellation (CVT) of points has many applications in geometry processing, including remeshing and segmentation, to name but a few. In this paper, we generalize the CVT concept to graphs via a variational characterization. Given a graph and a 3D polygonal surface, our method optimizes the placement of the vertices of the graph in such a way that the graph segments best approx...
